SUMMARY:Code and Community: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Minisymposium\n\nRinku Gupta (Argonne National Laboratory) and
Elaine Raybourn (Sandia National Laboratories)\n\nThe last decade of scie
ntific computing has seen increased interdependence between scientific cod
e and scientific communities. Scientific code provides a shared language f
or researchers in a scientific community to communicate, explore, collabor
ate and experiment with complex problems, new ideas and approaches, leadin
g to the evolution in their scientific fields. The open-source nature of m
any scientific codes allows for input and contributions from a diverse ran
ge of individuals and communities and at the same time facilitate the deve
lopment of new grassroots scientific communities, driven by the interests
and needs of users. However, several challenges exist in this ecosystem of
scientific code and scientific communities. In this talk, we will first d
iscuss the overall importance, need and benefits that arise from this mutu
al relationship of code and communities. We then explore broad challenges
(including but not limited to: community adoption of code, democratic acce
ss to scientific knowledge across cultures, scientific code and the test o
f time etc), and will delve deeper into some of these broad challenges, ex
plore what opportunities and solutions can perhaps alleviate these challen
ges.\n\nDomain: Computer Science, Machine Learning, and Applied Mathematic
